South go down 2-1 to the Eastern Lions.
Monday, 21 June 2010

A five minute lapse late in the first half cost Southern Suburbs dearly on Saturday when they went down 2-1 to Eastern Lions.

Southern started the game positively when a great pass from new signing Tomas Williams put Gaelan Walker through on goal and he beat the keeper to score his first goal for the season but more importantly gave Southern a 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the game. However two quick fire goals from Nick Bouios and Oran Harel in the 40th and 43rd minutes gave the Lions a 2-1 lead just before the interval. Southern had one late chance in the 90th minute to draw level when a goal keeping error let in Gaelan Walker with a chance, but his shot from a tight angle agonisingly hit the post.

The Reserves lost the early game 2-0.

On Sunday there were good wins for the Girls team who beat Berwick City 1-0 while the U18's won 4-0 against Brighton and remain in 2nd place just 2 points behind Oakleigh. The Thirds lost 5-2 to East Altona whilst the U11's drew 5-5 with Brighton.

Heatherton United take the points.

Southern Suburbs again went home empty handed on Saturday going down 3-1 to Heatherton. In a match played in heavy rain for its entirety it was the home team Heatherton who got off the mark first with an early goal after 10 minutes. Southern pushed to get back into the game however their finishing let them down. Heatherton were awarded a penalty just before the break and this was converted to give the hosts a 2-0 half time lead.

The second half saw a better Southern Suburbs team emerge from the break and soon after first gamer Christian Mellios pulled one back for Southern Suburbs to put them back into the game. As Southern pushed for an equalizer, Heatherton scored a clinical goal on the counter attack to regain the 2 goal cushion. There were to be no more goals in the game and the score finished 3-1 to Heatherton. Next week Southern plays Berwick City away in a catch up game that is crucial to both teams hopes of avoiding the drop.

The Southern Suburbs Reserves won 3-1 in the early game.

Pines take the points
Tuesday, 18 May 2010

On Saturday the senior team lost 2-1 to Frankston Pines despite creating enough chances to win the game comfortably. After the opening 20 minutes it was evident that that this may not be Southern’s day after an opening onslaught that saw no fewer than 6 unsuccessful attempts at the Pines' goal as well as a disallowed goal after only 2 minutes. Goran Petkovic and Sam Gibson had a couple of early chances each to grab the opening goal. As so often is the case, Frankston Pines' first good chance of the game in the 20th minute resulted in a goal to give them a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later Southern was back on level terms after Kosta Olabuntu was fouled in the box and Goran Petkovic scored the resultant penalty to make it 1-1. Southern then pushed hard for a second goal with firstly Michael Parisotto having his point blank back post header saved by the keeper and then Sam Gibson going close just before the break.

The second half saw fewer chances, however, Southern still looked the more likely to score. Against the run of play Frankston Pines took the lead in the 65th minute with an incisive move and clinical finish from the substitute to give Pines back the lead. Despite some late pressure from Southern they were unable to get an equaliser with Marcus Holmes’ header from close range the nearest they came to an equaliser.

The Southern Suburbs Reserves also lost 2-1 with Matt Mariole scoring a great goal from a free kick.

Next Saturday Southern Suburbs hosts Knox City at Keeley Park.

Girls win a close one.
Thursday, 13 May 2010

In a high scoring match the girls hosted newly promoted Noble Park on Sunday and were victorious winning 4-3.

In a closely contested match it was the visitors who got on the score sheet first in the 5th min of play after the NP striker saw keeper Eley off her line and curled the ball into the top right corner handing them a 1-0 lead. SS replied immediately as winger Kim Larby was able to make her way into the box and cut the ball across to striker Tina who tapped in from close range to make it 1-1. SS were dominating the majority of play and came close to adding a second when midfielder Shameena cracked a shot from way outside the 18 yard box and hit the upright. The woodwork was involved again when striker Tina dribbled close into the 18 yard box and crossed the ball hitting the crossbar and safely cleared by NP. As both teams contested for the ball it was the visitors who scored again around the 40min mark when an NP midfielder found space in the box to shoot, curling the ball into the left hand corner and going into half time with a 2-1 lead.

SS started the 2nd half by levelling the scoreline following a through ball by midfielder Thalia, to Tina who volleyed the ball into the back of the net levelling 2-2. SS was gaining more momentum now and their hard work paid off with a third goal. This came towards the 70th min when a neat through ball from the midfield found Tina who was able to outpace her marker and slot the ball into the bottom right hand corner giving SS the lead 3-2. The visitors replied back with an equaliser ten minutes later, again an NP striker finding space outside the 18 yard box to shoot and level at 3-3. With not much time left SS pressed hard for the winning goal. This was achieved in the 86th min when Tina Moutafis again received a precise through ball from the midfield enabling her to run into the box and shoot low towards the left hand corner handing SS the lead at 4-3. Tight defending by SS defenders saw the home team grind out a well deserved victory winning 4-3. Congratulations girls on a hard fought victory and well done to Tina Moutafis on scoring all four goals. The girls face Ashburton away this Sunday.
