New Floodlighting construction under way
Monday, 29 June 2009

Construction of the new floodlighting for the Southern Suburbs SC training ground has commenced with the concrete footings being poured last Friday. Construction is expected to be complete in 2-3 weeks. This will be a very welcome addition for the club in terms of its training capacity and is a culmination of a few years hard work by all concerned in the committee.

Thirds win a forfeit
Monday, 29 June 2009

The Thirds picked up a 3-0 win on Sunday after Latrobe Uni forfeited the game on Sunday morning due to lack of numbers. This was fortunate for SS as injuries had meant that SS would have only had 9 players available for the game this week.

Seniors back on top
Monday, 29 June 2009

Southern Suburbs is back on top of the table after a 2-0 win on Sunday against North Caulfield. SS put in a solid performance and could have won by a larger margin however the club is very satisfied with the 3 points.

SS began the game well creating a number of half chances before scoring a fantastic opening goal. Greg Giannakopoulos made a great 50 meter run down the wing before delivering a pin point cross for Andrew Strepelias to volley into the net. SS should have increased their lead just before half time when Robbie Nicovski found himself through on goal however his shot was saved by the keeper and then Con Tzoumanekas follow up shot was just wide of the upright.

The second half saw North Caulfield come more into the game however they didn't really test the SS defence or keeper. With 15 minutes to go a great move by SS opened up the North Caulfield defence and full back Michael Parisotto saw his close range shot saved before Tas Tzimos placed the rebound into the bottom corner to give SS a 2-0 lead. A couple of late SS chances nearly increased the lead however the score remained at 2-0 with the 3 points safely tucked away. The large travelling contingent of SS fans at the game were treated to some excellent individual performances from many players that contributed to the impressive team performance.

Unfortunately the reserves put in a disappointing performance to lose 4-0 however it was good to see a couple of players coming back from injury and getting some minutes under their belt.

Doveton Thirds 2 v Southern Suburbs Thirds 1
Thursday, 25 June 2009

The Thirds travelled to arch enemy Doveton in what has historically proven to be tough, hard fought games. A number of changes to the side as half of the squad were injured, sick or unavailable.

Beginning the game with only 10 men, SS held firm until a couple of players arrived to make the game a little more even. A number of half chances fell to Doveton who failed to take advantage of their opportunities.

Whilst SS were working hard through midfield, Peter Salatas hobbled off after a terrible tackle which wasn’t even rewarded ensuring that we would not have a sub for the remainder of the game. Doveton were looking very dangerous and took the lead half way through the first half after a shot from the edge of the area found the corner of the net. They increased their lead 10 minutes later after some poor goalkeeping allowed a freekick from the sidelines to float into the far top corner.

2-0 at halftime and the 3 points looked in the bag for Doveton. SS had George Tountas play upfront for the second half with Kosta but Doveton continued their dominance with multiple chances. SS’s defence were constantly on the backfoot and the keeper made a number of saves to keep them in the game. Against the run of play, SS scored an unlikely goal to set up a nervy finish for Doveton. With 20 minutes to go, the ball was played from defence down the right before being squared to George Tountas. He took on his floundering marker, cutting across another defender and with a clinical finish made it 2-1. A grandstand finish was in order and after being down for most of the game, it was SS which was piling on the pressure. In the final minute of play, George Tountas beat two oncoming defenders then squared the ball on the edge of the area to Young who only had the oncoming keeper to beat but his finish went just over the bar.

It was a disappointing end to the game but realistically, one where we hardly deserved to pinch a point.

Seniors lose first game of the season.
Tuesday, 23 June 2009

Southern Suburbs lost their first game of the season 1-0 to Springvale City and in turn gave up their longest unbeaten start to a season.

In what had proved a happy hunting ground for SS at Ross Reserve over the years wasn't to be last Saturday with ex SS player Kosta Olobountu scoring a freak goal from 40 meters early in the second half. Soon after Billy Vasilopoulos saved a penalty which fired up SS as they went in search on an equaliser. Try as they might they weren't able to find that elusive goal and therefore dropped back to 2nd place on the table by goal difference.

The Reserves won 3-0 in the early game.
