Southern Suburbs began the new season with a 1-1 draw against North Caulfield on a very poor (dry and uneven) surface.
The first half was a scrappy contest with very few chances created, however it was North Caulfield who adjusted quicker. North Caulfield opened the scoring when an awkwardly bouncing ball spilled free to enable the striker to slot past the advancing keeper and make it 1-0 to North Caulfield. The 1st half came to life for Southern Suburbs late on when Greg Giannakopoulos was put through clear on goals however the defender managed to put him under enough pressure to see his shot saved by the keeper. In the final minute of the half an unmarked Panos Nickas at the far post should have equalised however his shot went just wide.
The second half began with a more even contest however North Caulfield had an opportunity to increase their lead before new South keeper Bill Vasilopoulos made a miraculous save to his right just managing to tip the ball away for a corner. From here SS finished the last 30 mins the better team with Robbie Nicovski turning his defender and firing home over the advancing keeper at the 60 min mark. South then creating numerous chances to win the game with captain Nick Rossios firing just over the crossbar from a free kick, Giannakopoulos almost taking advantage of a keeper error but shooting wide and then Tele Cosentino having his well struck shot saved by the keeper. At the other end Vasilopoulos made another excellent save but it was SS looking more likely to grab the winner with both Peter Psarros and then Tele Cosentino missing "one on ones" in injury time.
Overall a fair result however in terms of overall chances created SS will feel a little hard done by.
The Reserves drew 3-3 in a see-sawing game with Steve Patsias grabbing 2 goals before going off with a new injury. George Achilleos then scored a late equaliser on 80 mins to make it 3-3.
