Seniors put five past Noble Park.
Monday, 4 May 2009

Southern Suburbs recorded an emphatic 5-2 victory over fancied opponents Noble Park Utd. South went into the game with an unchanged starting 11 and were in a determined mood.

Unfortunately SS lost striker Robbie Nicovski in the few couple of minutes with an ankle injury forcing coach Arthur Georgiou to bring on Telis Cosentino early. With few chances created in the opening 15 minutes it was left back Panos Nickas who created the first chance following a good run into the box which resulted in his shot taking a small deflection and going just wide of the upright. With SS starting to exert their influence on the game it was at the other end that Noble park were awarded a free kick with Chris Durand rifling the ball into the top corner on 30 minutes to open the scoring for Noble Park Utd.

It didn't take SS long to respond with a Nick Rossios corner which was flicked onto the crossbar and then Telis Cosentino was on hand to tuck home the rebound and make it 1-1 after 38 mins. Five minutes later Greg Giannakopoulos released Cosentino into the box and his pass across goal saw the ageless George Tountas fire the ball into the net to give SS a 2-1 lead at the break.

Noble Park did respond after the break and for the first 20mins put SS under a bit of pressure however the well drilled defence of Yosifides, Rodopoulos, Parisotto, Nickas and keeper Vasilopoulos held firm. Southern Suburbs now began to look for a third goal and it was Andrew Strepelias who duly obliged after receiving the ball out wide he took on his marker in the box and then smashed the ball into the top corner giving the keeper no hope. 3-1 to SS with 70min gone. Just five minutes later after a quick counter attack it was Strepelias again in the box who worked himself into a bit space and his well hit shot was parried into path of right back Michael Parisotto to side foot into the net and make it 4-1. SS wasn't finished and after 80min a through ball over the top put Andrew Strepelias through on goal and he rounded the keeper and put the ball into the empty net to make it 5-1.

Unfortunately SS conceded a consolation goal with a few minutes left with the ball adjudged to have crossed the line following a cross and diving effort to save from Vasilopouos. In the last minute SS almost made it six when Parisotto saw his "one on one" well saved by the keeper but had to settle for a very satisfying 5-2 win.

The Reserves also put in a fantastic performance beating the previously unbeaten Noble Park 3-1. Just back from holidays Peter Psarros scored a brace and Con Tzoumanekas finished off a great move to score the second goal. The South defensive group of youngsters marshalled by the experienced James Bellas defended resolutely with keeper Matty Laliotis also making some great saves.

Next week SS host Sandringham City at home in an important test.
