Seniors go top.
Tuesday, 12 May 2009
On Saturday the seniors produced a hard fought 2-1 victory over Sandringham City that sees the team go to the top of the table. Following last weeks big win over Noble Park it was important that the boys backed it up with a win at home to lowly Sandringham.
Southern Suburbs went into the game forced into a few changes due to injury. Despite the changed starting line up SS opened the scoring after 25 minutes. SS received a free kick just outside the box and from 20 meters out Tellis Cosentino stepped up and curled the ball into the top corner giving the keeper no chance to make it 1-0. Less than 5 minutes later SS had a second when Cosentino played Con Tzoumanekas through on goal and he coolly slotted the ball past the advancing keeper to make it 2-0. Sandringham responded late in the half with a couple of chances however the scoreline remained 2-0.
Into the second half and Sandringham managed to get one back when their new striker was left unmarked and headed into the corner to make it 2-1. Sandringham did have one more good chance however South keeper Billy Vasilopoulos made a good save. South finished the game the stronger and wasted 3 very good chances to put the game out of reach. Firstly Greg Giannakoulos could only volley Strapelias' cross straight to the keeper and then both Tellis Cosentino and Andrew Strapelias both failed to beat the keeper with their "one on one" opportunities. In the end South was happy to take the 3 points although will look to improve a couple of aspects of their performance.
The Reserves lost 3-1 despite taking an early lead through John Salatas. Sandringham were too strong in the end a finished up deserved winners. Unfortunately South finished the game with a few injuries (one serious) so we wish the boys a speedy recovery.
