Thirds go down 3-0 to South Yarra
Tuesday, 12 May 2009

With regular keeper, Jonathan Argiris out for the season, the Thirds had to take some extreme measures looking for a replacement. After the clubs reserves keepers were unavailable, the Thirds coach put his hand up to stand between the posts against league leaders, South Yarra.

An under strength SS went into the game with a couple of injury clouds and no one on the bench. The first half saw South Yarra pile on plenty of pressure on the hard working Thirds defence and they would have been disappointed with only half chances being created.

The score at half time was 0-0 and the boys were pleased to have contained South Yarra.

The second half started disastrously as 5 minutes in, the ball was allowed to bounce into the box and fell kindly to a South Yarra player who made no mistake from 8 yards out.

It was at this point that we began to enjoy more possession in midfield and began to venture into attack, especially down the left flank, creating a few half chances. This also allowed South Yarra to take advantage of our vulnerability with no subs as we began to tire. Their second goal came 30 minutes into the 2nd half from a corner that was wrongly given, although the chance was taken nicely taken via a well directed header.

South Yarra made it 3-0 right on 90 minutes after their striker was one on one with the keeper and slammed the ball into the net.

Although we battled on for most of the game and our defence held for most of it, South Yarra thoroughly deserved the points and they will be difficult to dislodge from the top this season.
