Thirds get 1st win of the year.
Tuesday, 26 May 2009
The Thirds notched up their first win for the season with an excellent team performance in their 2-1 win over East Altona.
SS started off a little slowly but as the game progressed, the addition of Steve Patsias in the centre of midfield allowed us to dominant the rest of the first half. The first goal came through some excellent passing from defence into the centre of midfield and then Tommy Angelakis provided the killer through ball to John Marapas who slide the ball past the oncoming keeper. SS continued pressuring their opposition, venturing forward down the right flank and creating numerous chances. It was such a move that enabled SS to go 2 up right on half time when the ball was crossed from the right and John Marapas controlled the ball right on the 18 yard box, and was initially looking to off load to a team mate, but then cracked the ball into the top corner.
The second half began like the first with the team trying to find that momentum from the first half. Matty, the ressies keeper made some fine saves, one which was an outstanding reflex save from 6 metres when he was one one one with an Altona East player..
On 65 minutes, Altona East gave themselves a chance after they scored a lucky goal from a misdirected cross that gathered momentum with then wind and ended up in the back of the net.
At the other end, Young had a chance to seal the game after a through ball, stepping past the oncoming keeper only to fire the ball into the side netting.
The boys defended doggedly over the last ten minutes and the referee finally blew his whistle to ensure we took home all three points.
A great win by the boys and hopefully they can follow it up against Monash this Sunday.
