Seniors beat 'bogey' team Boroondara.
Tuesday, 2 June 2009

The seniors recorded a 4 nil win over their bogey team Boroondara Eagles who'd beaten SS in their previous 4 encounters.

There would be no slip up this week despite missing a few key players the team was determined to get 3 points after a couple of draws against Brandon Park and Waverley.

Boroondara created the first chance of the game when a back pass to SS keeper Vasilopoulos "bobbled" forcing his clearance to go straight up in the air and the ensuring scramble on the goal line was cleared despite calls for a penalty. It was to be Boroondara's best chance on the first half with SS slowly stepping up the pressure. Greg Giannakopoulos had a good chance but with the keeper to beat missed the target. He then also saw his snapshot go over the crossbar soon after. South's corner count was building with Tellis Cosentino providing good delivery into the penalty area. It was from a corner that South opened the scoring when Tas Tzimos slammed home a loose ball into the roof of the net after 33mins.

The second half saw Boroondara come out strongly and with the wind at their backs they pinned SS into their defensive third for the 1st 15 minutes until SS slowly started to put the ball on the deck and use the width. A good move on the left saw Tellis Cosentino beat his man and from the by-line whipped in a powerful cross which was volleyed home by Greg Giannakopoulos to make it 2-0. South now began to take charge and it wasn’t long before Giannakopoulos had a second when a finished off a "one on one" from tight angle. South added their fourth goal following another corner with right back Michael Parisotto on hand to drive home the fourth goal for SS. Boroondara was awarded a penalty in the last minute when Vasilopoulos brought down the forward as he dived at his feet. Thankfully Vasilopoulos was able to save the spot kick and maintain the clean sheet and the 4-0 score line.

The Reserves unfortunately went down 2-0 in one of their poorer performances of the year however in all fairness to them injuries took a toll on their depth this week. The club will look forward to the bye this week which will give many players and opportunity to recover.
