South edge out Nuna 1-0
Wednesday, 17 June 2009
Southern Suburbs Seniors maintained their undefeated start to the season with a hard fought 1-0 win over Nunawading. The only goal of the game was scored by Andrew Strepelias who was on hand to tap home the rebound following Tellis Cosentino's freekick.
The game was a bruising affair with a couple of SS players certainly in doubt for next weeks game versus Springvale City. Nunawading started the game the better team and created an early chance that was headed off the goal line by Colin Rodopoulos. The yellow cards began to mount early and Nunawading's Dave Grella receied his second yellow for a body check and was consequently sent off. South began to take contol in the latter stages of the half with Cosentino shoting just wide while Chris Hoodless had a good chance but shot straight to the keeper.
South opened the scoring on the hour mark when Strepelias was fouled just outside the box. Tellis Cosentino took the freekick and Strepelias was on hand to put the rebound away to make it 1-0. South held onto the goal despite some late pressure from Nunawading.
The Reserves came back to draw 2-2 after being down 2-0.
