Southern Suburbs let early lead slip
Tuesday, 7 July 2009
Southern Suburbs faced Berwick in a top of the table clash on Saturday and it was Berwick who took their chances and returned to the top of the ladder while SS slipped to 2nd.
Southern Suburbs started the game confidently and after only 3 minutes were in front when an excellent looping corner by Nick Rossios put the keeper under pressure and his consequent fumble was tapped in on the goaline by Ross Martin. SS then soaked up some Berwick City pressure although were rarely troubled however on the half hour mark Berwick equalised when Pekmezovic headed home between 2 defenders. This sparked a response from SS with Colin Rodopoulos having a good chance to put SS in front with his back post header going just wide and then Greg Giannakopoulos rounded the keeper however took the ball too far and then his cut back from the by-line was cleared.
The second half saw the game develop into a battle with both teams trying to grab the advantage with Berwick City scoring a header after 55 minutes when Mackie rose unchallenged to score. While SS did push hard for the equaliser they didn't create and clear cut chances except from corners where some great delivery from Rossios created some scares for the Berwick defenders. The more SS pushed the more vulnerable they were to conceding a 3rd and Mackie scored a great goal in the last couple of minutes to ensure Berwick would take all 3 points.
In the early game an understrength Reserves team lost 6-2.
This week Southern Suburbs play their first home game at The Grange Reserve against Croydon.
