Two points dropped on Saturday
Monday, 20 July 2009
On Saturday the seniors travelled to Centenary Park to play Peninsula Strikers on a very windy day.
Southern Suburbs began the game kicking into the stiff breeze and despite winning a few early corners didn't manage to trouble the keeper. Peninsula won their first corner after 15 minutes and the ball was whipped into to the far post with the aid of the wind where it was volleyed from close range to make it 1-0 to Peninsula. South upped the pressure in the latter stages of the half but where not able to equalise.
The second now saw the wind favouring SS and they began confidently with Greg Giannakopoulos finding himself put through on goal but his chip over the keeper went wide. Soon after a free kick out wide was played in low and deceived everybody except for Colin Rodopoulos who tapped in from close range to score the equaliser and make it 1-1 after 65mins. A few minutes later a great "one two" between Andrew Strepelias and Ross Martin saw the defence split open and put Ross Martin through on goals however he was brought down in the box and a penalty was awarded to SS. Top scorer Andrew Strepelias stepped up and made no mistake from the spot to give SS a 2-1 lead. With momentum and the breeze firmly with SS they looked to be in command however only 5 minutes later, Peninsula had drawn level again after they drilled home a 25 metre free kick. With South pushing hard for the winner Panos Nickas almost won it when he intercepted a pass and ran onto goal only to have his initial shot and then the rebound blocked by the keeper. In injury time a long range strike from Captain Nick Rossios look destined for the top corner before going millimetres over the bar.
The disappointment on the SS players faces after the game was evident as the game was there for the taking. Despite the setback the team remains in 2nd place where next week they will meet 3rd placed Noble Park who joined SS on 27 points.
The Reserves has a disappointing finish to lose 4-0.
