Girls complete a quadrella of wins.
Wednesday, 26 August 2009
The SS girls won their 4th straight game beating visitors Monash Uni 1-0.
It was a tough encounter from the kick off as the visitors started stronger, exposing the home team’s defence and midfield many times but were wasteful with their shots on goal. Midway through the 1st half the home team began to settle and find its rhythm by claiming more possession of the ball. Both teams could not break the deadlock and went into half time at 0-0.
In the second half the home team stepped up a gear and were all over the visitors. Their persistence paid off in the 60th min mark when winger Vicki Papazoglou made her way into the 18 yard box and cracked a low shot towards goal. It was blocked by the Monash Uni defenders but the ball rolled back to her feet and on her second attempt she made no mistake curling the ball over the keeper to open the scoring and make it 1-0 to SS. The girls now had all the momentum and playing out the remainder of the match. SS pressed for another goal whilst the visitors tried to find an equaliser but the home defence held on firm to finish 1-0 victors. It was an extra special victory as it lifted the team out of the relegation zone and into 7th place with 16 points! One more victory could well see the SS girls safe from relegation and with two games remaining fingers are definitely crossed. Well done girls on a marvellous effort.
