Another 3 points and one step closer.
Monday, 31 August 2009

In a crucial game on Saturday, Southern Suburbs grabbed all 3 points in what was a very hard fought match against Nunawading City on the weekend. The game was played on the wide open spaces of Mahoneys Road however the pitch was uneven and bumpy. In front of a healthy sized crowd and with good atmosphere it the was the home side who started the better creating some early openings and good chances. It was a difficult first 20 minutes for the visitors and against the run of play big striker Andrew Strepelias was able to put some pressure on the Nunawading keeper and his attempted clearance rebounded of Strepelias towards goal giving Strepelias an easy tap in to open the scoring.

The hard work and hassling and consequent goal from Strepelias awoke Southern from their slumber although Nunawading was still creating the better chances however the ease at which they had created them early on had now slowed.

The second half was a tense affair with SS starting the 2nd half brightly and looking more assured but Nunawading still managed to create some good openings especially with their striker hitting the post when a great cross found him with only the keeper to beat. As the half wore on SS began to exert their experience on the game to grind out the 1-0 victory and maintain their place on top of the table.

The SS reserves lost 2-0 in the early game however played very well in the first half and should have taken an early lead however they were overun bu Nunawading in the 2nd half.
