Girls continue great form with 5 wins on the trot!
Thursday, 3 September 2009
On Sunday the SS girls continued their winning streak to 5 games in a row disposing of visitors Beaumaris 4-1.
In front of a healthy crowd due to the club’s final Sunday triple header for the year, which also coincided with the drawing of the major raffle the home team put on a great performance getting on the score sheet early within the first few minutes of the game. A corner awarded to SS was taken by Tina whose pin point accurate kick found fellow striker Kath Finlay lurking at the far post unmarked. She was able to easily header the ball in for goal and give the early lead to the home team 1-0. With much persistence from both teams possession of the ball was fairly even. A dubious penalty was awarded to the visitors on the 35min mark and Beaumaris’ striker made no mistake converting to level the score and go into half time at 1-1.
In the second half the home team needed to lift as three more points would surely see them safe from relegation. With this in mind the girls pressed on to find another goal. Ten minutes into the 2nd half the heaven’s opened with showers and soon enough it was raining goals at Keeley Park. A neat through ball from midfielder Maria G found striker Kath Finlay who managed to make her way into the 18 yard box and expertly curl her shot into the corner to make it 2-1. The home team now was beaming with confidence and soon enough a free kick was awarded to SS about 30 yards out from goal. Captain Tina Moutafis stepped up to take it and didn’t disappoint with a well struck shot leaving no hope for the keeper as the ball sailed out of her reach and into the back of the net. With the score now at 3-1 the home team still were not finished finding another goal shortly after via a corner. Tina whipped the ball into the 18 yard box where it was cleared by the Beaumaris defenders only to fall into the path of winger Vicki Papazoglou who for the 2nd week in a row mopped up a poor clearance drilling the ball past the keeper and making it 4-1. Beaumaris were clearly stunned at what had happened and could not recover as the SS defence held on strong to finish the game 4-1 victors. Great celebrations were seen after from the SS girls as the team song was sung loud and with pride!! Well done girls on a fantastic effort, everyone has dug in deep to put out solid performances over the last 5 weeks so that we remain in State 2. Congratulations once again.
