Girls Survive in State 2.
Thursday, 10 September 2009
The girls played Ashburton away on the final day of season 2009 but couldn’t produce a 6th straight win eventually going down 4-2.
On a windy pitch at Ashburton, SS conceded an early goal as the home team exposed the visitors defence and poked in a quick goal to make it 1-0. This woke SS from its slumber as striker Tina was able to run in on two occasions and shoot for goal, producing fine saves from the Ashburton keeper. SS were kicking with the wind and this helped them equalise in the 10 min mark. After some good passing through the midfield, striker Maria G was able to lob a through ball over to fellow striker Tina who chimed her way into the six yard box and boot the ball into the back of the net levelling the score at 1-1. SS were clearly dominating all over the field as Ashburton grew more and more frustrated. SS hard work paid off again towards the end of the first half when a neat through ball from sweeper Linda Dedic eluded everyone on the pitch, as the ball rolled in front of Tina who outpaced her markers and neatly slotted away to end the first half with a 2-1 lead.
In the second half the visitors were kicking against the wind and this proved SS downfall conceding 3 goals after the 70th min mark. Ashburton piled on the pressure whilst injuries and unfamiliar formation changes caused SS to lose its first half dominance and grip on the game. Some fine saves from keeper Voula Skafidiotis were not enough as the home team’s lead blew out to 4-2, SS simply could not recover ending the season with a 'rare' loss. Congratulations to the girls on a valiant effort. These last six weeks have proved that this womens team has what it takes to be a top 4 contender for next season. After being entrenched at the bottom of the ladder for 13 weeks straight the girls managed to find some hope together with “pytha spirit” and escape relegation. A big thank you goes out to coach George Liakopoulos for coaching us, Voula Skafidiotis for coming out of semi retirement to help us out in goals and Eddie Ruyter for providing half time refreshment’s and being linesman at every game this season. Bring on season 2010! G.
